Lenses for Every Situation

When you take quality photos, you need different lenses for different conditions. Canon owners have much to choose from and there are a wide range of lenses for EOS cameras.

Most digital SLR cameras that are intended for amateur use, is sold as a package with a lens. Although the lens supplied with the camera is a good starting lens, most photographers sooner or later buy more equipment.

Do you have an EOS camera, you have a lot to choose from. There are over 60 lenses in the Canon range and prices vary from a little over a hundred to several thousand dollars. The lenses in the professional L-series is the most expensive and highest quality, combining superb picture quality with a dust-and water-resistant construction.

Wide-angle, Normal and Telephoto

The most important thing to consider when choosing a lens, is the focal length that defines the perspective and scope, in other words, the area shown in the picture.

The lenses are divided into wide-angle lenses, normal lenses and telephoto lenses. Wide angle lenses are often used for landscapes, normal lenses for portraits and telephoto lenses for sports and wildlife photos. The exact focal length is given in millimeters.

Lenses can have a fixed focal length with only one sight, or they may have zoom, so you can change the focal length by turning the zoom ring. The focal length is changed continuously within the zoom range (e.g., 24-105 mm).

A zoom lens can have the same focal length as two or three fixed focal length lenses. This is one of the reasons why zoom lenses are so popular with both amateur photographers and professional photographers. Fixed focal length lenses provides the best image quality and the greatest maximum aperture.

Canon lenses in the EF and EF-S series range from a 14 mm fish-eye lens that takes pictures in a 180 degree view, to a 800 mm telephoto lens that is perfect when you want to snap a picture of the shy little bird. The range also includes special macro lenses for close-ups and TS-E lenses which corrects the distorted perspectives.

Start with Reasonable Zoom Lenses

Do you have an EOS 1000D or EOS 450D, you can start with the affordable zoom lens EF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, which comes with the camera body. The new version of this lens features built-in image stabilizer, so you can take entirely clear pictures without a tripod, even with low shutter speed.

If you want more lenses than the normal lens, a telephoto lens is better suited for portraits and natural images. EF-S 55-250 mm f/4.5-5.6 IS Image Stabilizer is a good telephoto lens for beginners, and has a focal length equivalent to 88-400 mm. If you want to move up to a professional level, you can buy the EF 70-200 mm f/2.8L IS II USM.

Many people who have a digital SLR camera, also buy a wide-angle lens. If you have a camera with a EF-S mount, you can use the EF-S 10-22 mm f/3.5-4.5 USM to capture stunning wide-angle scenes. EF 17-40 mm f/4L USM is the cheapest option for wide angle L-series, and can be used with all Canon EOS cameras.
