Lens Reviews - Which Canon or Nikon Lens to Buy
The best way to give the best lenses review is 'to some extent' shoot indoors at constant and controlled light with objects that are suitable for testing. The problem here is that you do not get to try the lens out in practice. Such tests should be combined with proper outdoor testing too. This is very time consuming, but the absolute best way to do it.
You can also focus on just to test the lens outdoors. Then you will get it tested well in practice, but it is not ensured smooth results because of lighting conditions and differences in how you take pictures. Therefore, it is difficult to compare the lenses against each other.
The advantage of this is that you get it tested better in real conditions the way that you actually use it. How the focus work under bright and dark conditions. How fast it is. If you dare to take the lens outside in the humidity because of the weather. How the zoom and focus ring feel. What size and weight affect the space in the bag and if you actually take one lens or another with you on short trips. How the lens can handle backlighting and how the images are in practice. etc...
But then another factor. Lenses are not always the same. Sometimes there are bad examples. To base a test on a lens that does not perform optimally is not the best test.
By looking at different tests around the world, you can also see different conclusions on various websites. This in spite of advanced testing in controlled environments. So, when all is said and done, it is not always the most advanced tests even give the same result.
Again, to test lenses is complicated matters, at least when you want to have satisfactory results which are comparable with each other.
